Ball games (2-3 years old)

You will need:
A large ball

Engage in ball games with your child, using the ball in different ways (such as rolling, kicking and throwing) to support your child moving their body in any different ways. Spend a few minutes encouraging your child to focus on manipulating the ball with each movement, taking turns to get the ball back and forth between you (Hint:  you could include siblings or other family members into the game as this will also promote sharing and turn taking).

Animal actions (3-4 years old)

You will need:
No equipment needed!

Play an 'animal actions' game with your child, like this:
Call out a type of animal and encourage your child to do it's actions - eg., 'Can you stand like a Flamingo?' whilst giving an example yourself  eg., you stand on one leg.
This will support your child in controlling and manipulating their body whilst making many different movements,  such as slithering (like a snake) , hopping (like a bird), stomping (like an elephant) and leaping (like a frog).
Talk with your child about how the actions make them feel eg., tired, thirsty etc.

Other activities you can enjoy with your children to support their physical development

Your child's physical development also includes learning how to care for themselves and their health. Here are some things that you can do which will promote their development in these areas:

Helping your child to wash their hands after nappy changes/going to the toilet

Talking to your child about the different foods in their meal, which foods are healthy that we can eat lots of and which foods are not so healthy which we can't eat so much of

Encourage your child to try to dress themselves in the morning or before bed, as this will help to build their independence. This is especially important for the children leaving the PreSchool to start at school, as they will need to be able to change for PE.

Do some mark making with your child, using different tools such as crayons, pencils, pens etc. to allow them practice using different grips to hold and control the tools.

Encourage your child to assist you in preparing their breakfast cereal,  filling their bowl with the cereal and using the milk bottle to pour in their milk. This will support their manipulation and control skills.

Take part in daily exercise, whether its going for a daily walk ( and your child could take their scooter/bike if they have one) or maybe you and your child could both do a 'Cosmic Kid's Yoga' class on YouTube, where there are lots of different themed videos such as 'The Gruffalo', 'Trolls' and 'Frozen'.
