Senses scavenger hunt (2-3 years old)

No equipment needed!

Your child will need to find 5 things during a scavenger hunt around their home/garden. These things will each support one of their senses (taste, touch, smell, hearing and sight).

The five items that you and your child need to hunt for are:
  • something shiny
  • something smelly
  • something spikey
  • something noisy and
  • something sweet.

This activity will encourage your child to use all of their senses to explore things around them. You can help by using  words which describe the different items that your child explores such as 'soft', 'sour', 'loud' etc.

Senses search (3-4 years old)

No equipment needed!

During this activity, your child will explore each of their senses (taste, touch, smell, hearing and sight).

The idea is that you and your child will go on a hunt around your home /garden to find one item that they like for each of their senses.

You can support your child by encouraging them to explore different things for each sense eg., feeling a soft blanket, a fluffy rug and a house brick or tasting some jam, licking a lemon and biting a tomato.

This will give your child the chance to make their own decision through their own testing.

Once you have found something for each sense you could talk to your child about which of the things they liked the most and why and which they didn't like so much.

Other activities you can enjoy with your children to help them explore their senses:

Make some gloop by mixing cornflour and water together to create a firm yet runny consistancy. This is an easy, fun way to get your child to explore textures.

See what different noises you can make using everyday objects in the house eg.,scraping the teeth of a comb, tapping cutlery together and so on.

Explore your spice rack with your child -  you can smell (and even taste!) the different herbs and spices together.

Using a torch (you could use the one on your phone ) turn the lights off and create some shadow puppets using your hands, what different shapes can you make?
